Scope of work
Urban Sanctuary showcases outstanding contemporary houses in urban Australia and New Zealand that explore and demonstrate new inventive ways of living with the outdoors.
A response to the increasing pressures of urban density – tightly packed houses,
noise, threatened natural ecologies, a diminished connection to nature and less outdoor space – Urban Sanctuary explores contemporary architecture that brings the outdoors in.
A combination of colour, layering and typography captures the intersection of nature and the built form, while the fluid and varied layout suggests an integrated and evolving relationship between the houses and their surrounding gardens and landscapes.
A flexible design system was developed to reflect the diverse nature of the content and accommodate a range of text, imagery and architectural plans. The book is structured around a series of case studies introduced by dynamic divider spreads, amplified by the six-colour palette, which was drawn directly from the projects featured in the book.
